The last time we played against South Melbourne was at home in 1981, before they were uprooted to Sydney amongst great acrimony and controversy.

 

That was Round 15 of 22 on Saturday 11th July 1981. Here below are is what happened from the fantastic AFL TABLES Website

One thing about tomorrow, will be the big banners-

 

However the South Melbourne banner from that game back in 1981- is remembered because the South players deliberately did not run through it. The banner was completely black, in protest at the proposed move of South Melbourne to Sydney. So the South players ran around it instead.

 

The season before (1980) South Melbourne were a big chance to play in the finals with a few weeks to go, yet unfortunately they fell away towards the end of the season and subsequently missed out.

Who knows - maybe if they'd made the finals they wouldn't have moved. Then again, the league could have simply made another club go to Sydney...
