Should Geelong lose this Friday evening to Hawthorn on the MCG and St Kilda lose at the Docklands Stadium to Sydney on Saturday evening- then the following week it will be Geelong v Sydney on the MCG.
So what is the big deal about that?
Well it will be only time that the red and white team have played Geelong in MELBOURNE since they were their previous state as South Melbourne back in 1981.
South Melbourne v Geelong from 1981 at the Lakeside Oval was the last game played in MELBOURNE between these sides.
Now the next fact is that it would be on the MCG (it wont be at the Docklands) and the last time these two sides played against each other on the MCG was in 1934 in a final.
Only recently has Geelong v St Kilda clashes on the MCG became a bit more often- prior to their final in 2008, it had been less that 5 times- quite amazing for two 1897 clubs.
Whilst Sydney haven't played Footscray trading as wb at the Docklands Stadium EVER and our last clash with them in the ordinary home and away season in Melbourne was at the now defunct Waverley Park in 1998- they have also NEVER played Geelong there at the Docklands either.
So we may well see a game between the club representing Australia's largest city against the 2nd biggest city in Victoria- finally in Melbourne.
So put simply the Sydney Swans have never played Geelong in Melbourne. So if your a Sydney based Sydney supporter with no connection to the old South Melbourne- then this possible fixture would be the first time that you have seen the swans play Geelong in Victoria other than at Kardinia Park.
