I would just like to point out that my other great sporting love is the Celtic Football Club from Glasgow.

This causes much confusion for me, because you may know that Celtic have an epic rivalry with Glasgow Rangers [rivalry is putting it mildly] who wear red, white and blue.

Anyone else feel my pain? Or indeed any Rangers supporters want to discuss how they are the European equivalent of Richmond?

mwohahahaha!!!

Years ago around 1985,(yes I am pretty sure it was definitely 1985) there was an article on one of the Footscray local papers about a soccer player from Scotland who was over here in Melbourne.

The blokes name I am reasonably sure was Mark Read or Reid. However he definitely played for Celtic in the Scottish league. It was mentioned in the story how Celtic wore green and white and their arch rivals Rangers played in red, white and blue. This newspaper be it the Footscray Mail, the Western Times or the Footscray Advertiser made mention of that interesting paradox.

I recall this older bloke(so I assume he was originally from Scotland) wearing a Celtic jacket to the Western Oval some prior to 1996. It was one team support game( against West Coast or Brisbane when they were the Bears) then I saw him at another home game so I take it he was a Bulldogs fan.

Anyway he stood out in his green and white Umbro Celtic jacket amongst the red white and blue jackets of 99% of every one else around him. Nevertheless there were this other group of around 5 accented Scottish Footscray supporting blokes nearby on the way to the bar and two of them were sporting Rangers attire. Both the old bloke in the Umbro Celtic jacket and the two Rangers fellas looked at each other quizzically and then walked past each other! The third bloke amongst these Rangers blokes had a Manchester City scarf on, I think he may have been English hanging out with the Scottish blokes.

Footscray football club takes in all types

Be good to see someone where a Stenhousemuir or Cowdenbeath jacket at the football here? Hey mate who's that team will be the reaction?

The Scottish season must start this weekend or the next one? Suppose I should surf around and look it up to get the definitive answer? They usually start before the English season.

Starts this weekend with the Hoops taking on Kilmarnock!

England will begin proper last week of August. You've never said which team you follow Caveman!

I would guess West Ham United but only if they change their name to Foots Ham United?

Colchester United. Who? Why?

Well the Caveman family comes from a place called Ardleigh in Colchester- have been there for centuries. So instead of being a fence sitter without a team I decided well I have a long standing connection with them, so it will be Colchester United. So I would be an Essex fan in English County Cricket I guess.

I need a reason to follow a team. One of my mates is a Liverpool fan becasue they were successful when he was growing up in the 1970's. He has no connection to Liverpool the city at all. Ditto for another bloke who is Manchester United.

Another one of my mates is Arsenal, but his father came from North London when he was 15 years of age, so the Arsenal bloke has at least a connection for following them rather than just being a bandwagoner.

I know a bloke who is a Falkirk fan. I am not sure of the exact reason why he supports them but he has seen them play in Scotland and all that. I remember speaking to him about it in the early 1990's and he told me about their chants that they said against the Ayr United fans at some game he had attended prior to 1997

Some years later in 1998 I saw him again for the first time in a few years and asked what he thought about Falkirk making the 1997 Scottish Cup Final. He told me that he rang the Falkirk Football Club up from Australia just after they had beaten Celtic in the Semi Final replay and asked what were his chances of gertting tickets for the game? Falkirk told him that if he was willing to travel to Scotland from Australia to cheer on Falkirk in the Scottish Cup Final then they would save tickets for him. He answered that he was definitely keen and prepared to come, so Falkirk kept tickets for him. He then duly travelled to Scotland and saw them play in that 1997 Scottish Cup Final. Sadly for Trevor and Falkirk they lost 0-1 to Kilmarmock -but nontheless he saw them on their big day.

Colchester aren't bad! You got Teddy Sheringham and Adam Virgo from Celtic!

Not a bad start to the season by the Hoops, which given the state of the Doggies in the last few weeks has given me some joy. Only problem is the Rangers have started even better.

Don't worry, early days. They'll fold like Richmond faced with a stiff breeze.

Teddy Sheringham- he's had more clubs that Jack Nicklaus as Tommy Docherty once said of himself.

I worked in scotland in 2006. I used to get drunk - very drunk - with an irish mate and watch celtic games with him. I even went to Park Head a few times... I have the utmost respect for that club and its supporters. I loved Glasgow and the passion for football.... Go Naka!
