Omens for a Geelong victory in the 2011 Grand Final

Collingwood only beat Geelong in Grand Finals when the President of the United States is a Republican

1925: Geelong beat Collingwood: USA President- Calvin Coolidge (Republican)

1930: Collingwood beat Geelong: USA President -Herbert Hoover (Republican)

1937: Geelong beat Collingwood: USA President- Franklin D. Roosevelt (Democrat)

1952: Geelong beat Collingwood: USA President- Harry S Truman (Democrat)

1953: Collingwood beat Geelong: USA President- Dwight D. Eisenhower (Republican)

2011: Collingwood v Geelong: USA President- Barack Obama (Democrat)

British Royal Weddings

In 1981 there was a Royal wedding. Queen Elizabeth's son married and

Collingwood played in the Grand Final and lost to a team in navy blue and white. RESULT=They LOST

Thirty years later

In 2011 there was a Royal wedding- Queen Elizabeth's Grandson married –

Collingwood played in the Grand Final against a team in navy blue and white. RESULT=?

Collingwood's opponents had a coach in his first year at that club. 1981 was David Parkin's first season at Carlton and 2011 is Chris Scott's first season at Geelong

In 1931 Geelong won the Grand Final with a coach there in his first season(Charlie Clymo) just as 2011 is Chris Scott's first season.

Years ending in a 1 for both teams

1901: Collingwood lost to Essendon

1911: Collingwood lost to Essendon

1931: Geelong beat Richmond

1951: Geelong beat Essendon

1981: Collingwood lost to Carlton

2011: Collingwood v Geelong

So Collingwood lose in years ending in a 1 and Geelong win in years ending in a 1

The 2 most recent times before 2011 where one of the Grand Final coaches has-

In the same year, a brother as a rival coach in the same competition:

2011: Brad Scott (North Melbourne) & Chris Scott (Geelong)

Chris Scott v Collingwood

1964: Len Smith (Richmond) & Norm Smith (Melbourne)

Norm Smith (Melbourne) His team WON and they BEAT Collingwood in the Grand Final

1960: Len Smith (Fitzroy) & Norm Smith (Melbourne)

Norm Smith (Melbourne) WON. His team WON and they BEAT Collingwood in the Grand Final

Wow, that's an impressive investigation!
Anyway, this "Collingwood winning Grand Finals" lark had to end eventually! Well done Geelong, they lost their best player, their coach, their president, they were supposed to be too old but in the end they were magnificent. Forget about premiership windows, a good team is a good team, period.

Thats right- they were arguably the best team all year.

As for their President-

One year- One Grand Final appearance, One Grand Final Victory.

Not a bad start to this AFL caper for Carter.

Yet hardly anyone knows what he looks like- this Colin Carter bloke? Just like the St Kilda President- Greg Westaway- his record is quite impressive, but probably 90% of non- St Kilda fans would NOT recognise him in the street should he walk past them.

So there is a place for the quiet low profile President to be a high achiever in the modern AFL.
