[Caveman]

Years that end in a 5 have been quite good to Footscray at Kardinia Park (as opposed to years that end in other numbers- very different story)

2005 - Loss by 35 points

1995 - Victory by 15 points

1985 - Victory by 22 points

1975 - Victory by 8 points

1965 - Lost by 2 points

1955 - Lost by 12 points

1945 - Victory by 17 points

 

Corio Oval

 

1935 - No game there that year

1925 - Loss by 39 points

 

The win in 1975 occurred a week after the Neil Sachse tragedy.

 

The win in 1985 can be seen here on Footscray Games in the Footscray Tube. Some of the 1st and 4th quarters of that game. 

 

Of the defeats none were thrashings.

Well, we had no luck in Geelong this year, but today we beat the Magpies, and now I'm beginning to feel a bit optimistic about our chances of reaching the finals. With Essendon, Melbourne (surely lightning won't strike us twice...) and Brisbane still to come, a spot in the eight seems ours to lose. Let's see!

If we do reach the finals, it would be a very special year for me, as I decided to part with some of my hard earned money and get a membership (the one that doesn't get come with any tickets, obviously), so maybe, who knows, before each game Luke Beveridge goes all sentimental and says, "now listen lads, let's win this for all our members over in the Antipodes, they have to get up in the middle of the night to listen to our matches", maybe that's why we're playing so well!

The reason that I brought this up is that, because I bought my membership before the season began, my name was apparently put on a "Wall of Honor" at Whitten Oval. Do any of you know about this wall? If so, could any of you take a picture of the spot where my name is and e-mail it to me? I'll probably never get go to West Footscray, Vic., so it would mean a lot to me. Caveman knows my name, you can ask him if you want!

Good to learn that Luke Beveridge and the boys are considering keen overseas fans from Europe like yourself Lisbon who are listening in at those weird hours in the middle of the night by playing an ATTACKING, GET THE BALL INTO THE FORWARD LINE QUICKLY brand of football, not the "ring a ring a rosy' style that some teams keep persisting with.

 

I will get over there asap and have a look for you. I have just been extremely busy of late, hopefully a bit more time available this week.

Hi again Lisbon- when I was last at the club I did take a photo of the wall with a list of names on it.

 

Yet sorry to mention this but unfortunately it appears that you are not there on it at this point.

This is an interesting topic, Caveman because I recently paid a visit to Kardinia Park with two very good friends and fellow footy history lovers.  I think we were all impressed with the size of the stadium down there and what appears to be a huge development taking place.  Visited the   Geelong museum and spoke at length to one of the staff.  They certainly have a good museum under way.

Interesting about Footscray's lack of success at Geelong over the years.  The actual ground at Geelong seems very similar to the Western Oval in both it's length and width, and being only an hour apart up the highway you would wonder why it was such a bogie ground.  Maybe because Geelong's most successful years may have coincided with some of Footscray's less successful years.  

Anyway, Caveman I had a very enjoyable day there with two top blokes who love their footy.

That is what I have l discovered through the years.

 

Those who don't care about the history of their club (or the game) I tend to find are not likely to be knocking on the door of MENSA.

I have a good friend who lived in Geelong (he was a Geelong supporter - he's gone elsewhere these days) and each time Footscray and Geelong played at Geelong I would go down there for a fine weekend of eating and drinking good wine.  We also went to the game of course.  In all my years of doing that I didn't once see the Doggies win.  There were two or three times when he called during the week before and say he couldn't make it for some reason.  Every one of those times Footscray won - it's if he had a sixth sense about these things.  Oh well.

The " tens" decade hasn't been as good as the "seventies" for us at Geelong. Bob Rose and Terry Wallace the only two coaches to have regular success there. Micky Malthouse has one win there, Allan Joyce also had one win. Terry Wheeler has two close defeats and his own sacking after an 88 point defeat.

They are still increasing the capacity of Kardinia Park, so there will be more chances in the future (unlike Subiaco which will be all over in under 2 years) to rectify our recent record of no luck down there.
