The final score in the Grand Final

there are a few connections or associations with it.

 

the 89- year of the Footscray Fightback.

 

13.11.89- the winning teams score in 1990- the breaking of a drought for the magpies, but 32 years is nothing compared to 62 years. 

 

The reverse of 89 is 98. 1898 was the year that Footscray first won a senior Premiership. 

 

However for me the score of 13.11. 89 is always remembered with another score 16.11.107, but they were not registered by Footscray.

When North Melbourne finally broke through in 1975 after a 50+ year drought and won their first Premiership since their VFA Days, their opponents (Hawthorn) score was

One more- though hardly twilight zone stuff- Sydney's team alphabetically as displayed on the AFL Tables website- take away the Gary and Nick and you have Rohan Smith.

Very interesting Caveman.  The one that has stuck in my head for some reason is -

 

Essendon won the flag in 1965 with a final score of 14-21-105.

 

Had to wait 19 years for their next flag in 1984 when they won with a final score of 14-21-105.

Yes that is right about Essendon and their two scores in 1965 and 1984.

Now for the hypothetical regarding Toby McLean and his kick on the final siren from a set shot

 

 

If Toby McLean had from his set shot what was always to be the last kick of the game  -

 

(1) kicked into the man on the mark (like Peter Hudson in the 1971 Grand Final)

 

(2) Hit the beyond post

 

(3) Just stuffed it right up it and it went straight out on the full (like Malcolm Blight did at Arden Street in 1977 against Hawthorn)

 

(4) Not made the distance - (just like Nathan Eagleton in the 3rd quarter of the 2008 Preliminary Final) 

 

(5) Kicked it backwards or sideways (as has been common place since 1997- started by Sheedy at Essendon)

 

(6) Copy what Brian Gilmore did with his set shot in 1954 and throw the ball away to celebrate with teammates

then the score would have finished at 13.10.88

 

and 13.10.88 was the score 20 years ago in the Grand Final of 1996 for Sydney

Yet if Toby McLean had of kicked it truly  -

 

the final score would have been 94

That would have been good actually the same final total as the winners in 1961

Wow!!  The first score that I probably remembered as a kid was 1969 when Carlton set a new record against Hawthorn with 30-30-210.  It was a score that seemed to have a symmetry to hit.  Hawthorn kicked 12.10.82.

 

I notice that the last quarter of that came has now bobbed up on You Tube,

That 30.30.210 was a score I knew well before  Round 13 of Saturday 1st July 1978.

Makes you wonder what else might hopefully bob up on Youtube, Caveman.  What about footage of EJ's 300th game at Princes park against Fitzroy?  Was that round 1 1969?  Think it was a split round and the game was replayed on Channel 7 with Mike Williamson and Butch Gale the commentators.  What a find that would be!!

Yes Rod, it certainly was his 300th on that Round 1 Easter Monday 7th April 1969.

 

George Bisset of Footscray and Kevin Murray of Fitzroy competing in what was the season that Kevin Murray won the Brownlow and "Wee Georgie" just missed out to "Bulldog" Murray.

Then 5 days later from the next Round of 1969 (Round 2) featured amongst other things that Carlton v Hawthorn game where The Blues registered 30.30.210.  

 

As it often happens to a team the week after a disaster (eg St Kilda 1978, Melbourne 1979, North Melbourne 1983 ) - Hawthorn 128 point losers to Carlton in Round 2, knocked over Essendon at Windy Hill.

Just looking at those tables, Caveman I think there were a few interesting players taking part.  Treva McGregor for Fitzroy - did he win a Stawell Gift.  Doug Searl played in Collingwood's 1 point loss to St.Kilda in the '66 Grand Final.  Shane Molloy and John Murphy both had sons who went on to play League Football.  Norm Brown went on to coach Fred Cook at Port Melbourne who was playing for Footscray that day.

 

For Footscray - was it Graeme Joslin or his brother, Les who went on to play a couple of Tests for Australia when Bill Lawry was captain?  Ted Whitten and David Darcy both had sons who went on to play League Football.

 

David Thorpe played in a premiership for Richmond. 

 

They talk about the game being multi-cultural today but look at some of the names that played in this game 47 years ago - Ruskucklic, Zunneberg, Delmenico, Magee, (who was of Irish descent), Radziminski and Spargo. I think Footscray also had Charlie Pagnoccollo on the list that year.

 

It must have been an entertaining game - 74 scoring shots between the two teams!

 

One umpire and 78 free kicks paid for the day!

 

And a healthy attendance of 20,000 at Princes park

Umpires had to be fit in those days didn't they? They probably paid free kicks just to get their breath back or have a little break from proceedings.

 

It was Les Joslin who played one test for Australia in 1968. His brother Graeme played between 1969 and 1971- that Round 1 game was his only match in 1969 though he played most in the seniors in 1970. Graeme Joslin's final match was the last game of 1971 (Round 22 against St Kilda) which was also Teddy Whitten's last match as senior coach ending a career that went from Round 1 1951 to Round 22 1971. Over 20 full years.
